Profit-driven technologies and a proliferation of unproven chemicals have, in many ways replaced what nature intended for our health. We are innocent victims. For the first time in all history, because of cheap, subsidized corn production in this country, millions of animals are now raised in close confinement and fed on diets that are not healthy for them. There is an increasingly high wall that keeps the public from seeing these huge industrial livestock operations. It would ruin your appetite to visit these CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations). Most antibiotics sold in the United States today end up in animal feed. Such heavy use is commonly known to create superbugs - anti-biotic-resistant strains of bacteria that can be deadly. In these huge feedlots, animals are forced to live mainly on corn, not grass. Why? Because it's cheaper. Instead of grazing for 4-5 years from birth to slaughter, animals are now brought to slaughter within 14 to 16 months. They are fed tremendous quantities of corn and an arsenal of drugs. Thousands of gallons of liquefied fat and protein supplements are pumped into their troughs every day. They are fed from vats of liquid vitamins and synthetic estrogen as well as 50-pound sacks of the antibiotics Rumensin and Tylosin. A little silage and alfalfa hay are thrown in for roughage. Animals can't live on such a diet for very long. It would blow out their livers and kill them. So they are bred and fed to get to slaughter quickly and the antibiotics keep them alive long enough to slaughter. They would not survive on this diet without antibiotics. The fats they consume often come from beef tallow, a form of cannibalism that carries its own risks. Protein is a brown goop made from molasses and urea (made from natural gas). The meat that comes from these animals is much less healthy than meat from grass-fed animals because it's far lower in omega-3's and CLAs.
